Reflecting on 2020
What a year 2020 has been! The new decade started with so much anticipation. Then out of nowhere, a pandemic unfolded before our eyes. In so many ways, on so many levels, the entire world was put through a massive test. It’s still unclear how things will pan out, but I continue to remain hopeful.
What was 2020 like for you? 2020 for me was a year of learning and growing, and my personal test came in the form of coaching training. Come to think of it, none of the trainings I did up to now put me through the wringer quite like coaching did.
During this journey, I learned two important takeaways.
Uncertainty isn't bad - just learn how to surf
This year, to my dismay, I discovered I had a fixed mindset. I was unaware of that until I was challenged to question my truths which I believed to be, well, true. Suddenly, everything became doubtful and uncertain and I felt like I made a terrible mistake in undertaking this training.
Until I learned how to surf uncertainty. You do this by becoming a curious observer, even to yourself. Funnily enough, that gave me more stability. I stopped getting tossed around by uncertainty and started learning from it.
Now I think uncertainty is a good thing because it reveals the very issues that need to be addressed.
Become your own champion
Being supported by others is great. But you don’t have to wait for other people to come and support you or feel unsupported because they don’t. You can become your biggest champion, now! I was told, make a choice.
When you become your own champion, it means you’re taking a stand for yourself. Once you become your own champion, you can’t un-champion yourself. It’s not an option you entertain! So your mindset shifts accordingly.
What changed for me was:
- I stopped comparing myself to others.
- I stopped allowing self limiting beliefs to stop me or slow me down.
- I started taking more proactive action to change my habits.
- I started challenging myself more so I can grow.
A word of thanks
I hope that by sharing my takeaways from 2020, they can give you some renewed energy for 2021.
I learned them thanks to the efforts of a lot of people. Numerous peer coaches and practitioners provided many, many sessions for me, sometimes on the same topic, simultaneously. Little by little, they all helped me shift my mindset from a fixed to a growth one.
Special mention goes to my personal coach. How I met her was by pure chance, but now that I think of it, perhaps the Universe lent me a hand? Because those sessions were pivotal for me. I can’t thank her enough for her powerful support.
Lastly, I’m deeply grateful to all of you – session clients and blog readers – for allowing me to be a part of your journey. You teach me a lot through the challenges you face and it fills me with joy when I see you change, evolve and grow! I will continue serving you to the best of my ability, whatever form that may take.
May you always be supported on your journey of healing and growth! Wishing you a happy 2021!
